--- 3 day course: portrait painting on  glass.---

Ellen Van Dijk

The focus of this intensive three-day workshop is portrait painting on glass. Throughout the weekend, you will explore how to build up a portrait using several layers of paint without having to fire the glass between each layer. This allows you to work more freely and efficiently while gaining a better understanding of how the different materials and techniques interact.

You will learn how and when to use different painting mediums, and how to combine them effectively to achieve the desired result. Particular attention will be given to working with colour, from selecting and mixing colours to creating subtle transitions and variations that bring a portrait to life.

Another important aspect of the workshop is learning how to create light, shadow and depth. You will discover how the placement and intensity of your paint can influence the expression and three-dimensional appearance of your work, and how to use these techniques to create a convincing and vibrant portrait.

Throughout the workshop, Ellen will provide individual guidance and practical demonstrations, helping you develop your own approach while working at your own level. The small group size ensures that everyone receives plenty of personal attention and has the opportunity to ask questions, experiment and refine their technique.

The three-day workshop includes:

  • Three full days of tuition and personal guidance by Ellen
  • Use of the necessary materials and kiln
  • Practical demonstrations and individual feedback
  • A discount on purchases of materials during the workshop
  • Lunch and drinks throughout the workshop

--- 3 day course: painting animals

Ellen Van Dijk

This three-day workshop is dedicated to mastering the art of glass painting, with a particular focus on creating realistic and expressive animal portraits. Some prior experience with glass painting techniques is recommended, as the workshop will focus on developing and refining existing skills rather than introducing the very basics.

Throughout the course, you will explore the process of building up a detailed animal portrait through multiple layers of paint and the use of different painting mediums. You will learn how to combine these techniques to create subtle tonal variations, fine details and convincing transitions between light and dark.

Special attention will be given to capturing the texture and character of fur, including the fine details of individual hairs and whiskers. You will learn how to create depth and volume by carefully controlling light, shadow, highlights and transparency, allowing the animal to appear as lifelike as possible.

We will also look at how to translate a photographic reference into a painted design, identifying the essential details that give an animal its expression and personality without becoming overwhelmed by unnecessary information.

During the two days, participants will have the opportunity to complete three different animal portraits. You may choose to work from the provided examples or bring your own photographs or designs as a reference. Personal guidance and feedback will help you adapt the techniques to your chosen subject and develop your own approach to realistic glass painting.

The workshop combines demonstrations, practical exercises and individual guidance, giving you plenty of time to experiment with the different techniques and apply them directly to your own work.

The number of participants is limited to ensure a relaxed learning environment and allow for plenty of individual attention throughout the workshop.
